From the attic to the book launch
“If you love theatre, if actors enthral you, if you adore inside stories, then ‘Are You Going to do That Little Jump?’ is a must-read.” So wrote the critic from Entertainments Focus.
This quote was the culmination of 18 months of working with actor Robert Gillespie to publish his memoirs. With an acting career spanning seven decades and counting, it was an enlightening experience working with Robert and bringing this project to fruition, in the shape of a special limited edition book.
From both his cellar and also his attic – saved by a miracle (a story in itself) – various treasures came to light, which we photographed to provide a rich visual accompaniment to an ‘old actor telling tales’.
The book was launched at the St Paul’s Centre in Hammersmith and during the evening Robert signed copies, chatted with guests, recounted tales from the Old Vic (when he worked with the likes of Richard Burton and Claire Bloom), and read extracts from the book which celebrates a pivotal time in British theatre.
Robert was delighted with the outcome, and has also commissioned TCE to help promote his theatre company, Jane Nightwork Productions.
”Paul at TCE immediately sprang to mind as possible designer when I was finishing Part One of Are You Going to do That Little Jump? – my autobiography. Paul, in fact, became the creator of all aspects of the finished book. He meticulously photographed key items from my archive and is responsible for images, text, lay-out and paper. He essentially became its publisher, arranging printing and sales outlets. He set up the launching of the book and one guest, I remember, lovingly handling the finished volume said, ‘Gosh, we can’t afford, anymore, to produce books of this high quality.’
The finished work is a pleasure to hold in the hand, and turning the pages is a delight”.
