The assignment
Located in St Thomas’ Hospital on the banks of the River Thames, Florence Nightingale Museum celebrates the life and work of the world’s most famous nurse. The museum attracts visitors from all over the world who want to learn more about the Lady with the Lamp and her Victorian world.
As the primary means for potential visitors to find out about the museum, we were tasked to redesign their website which was looking tired, receiving a low volume of hits and was painful for members of staff to maintain.
Converting web visitors into museum goers
Our website brief included these six goals:
• Provide a flavour of who we are and what we do
• Appear fresh and accessible
• Encourage people to visit
• Give clear information
• Reach new audiences
• Be simple to maintain
Our solution, aside from being aesthetically pleasing, is designed to be more agile, interactive, easier to read and navigate with the ultimate aim of turning web visitors into museum goers. It is content rich and includes features such as the voice of Florence Nightingale, one of the first recordings ever made in 1890 using an Edison phonograph wax cylinder.
Phase two of the project was to build an online shop, where website visitors from all over the world are able to purchase merchandise helping to raise vital revenue for the museum.
Quadrupling the number of website visitors
We were delighted to report that in its first month the number of site visitors more than quadrupled. But the project’s success was also measured on whether the museum staff could maintain and update the site on a regular basis. This was achieved by providing onsite training and ongoing support.
